Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is in early access, and Xbox Wire's onboarding guide lays out the systems that decide whether you extract or lose your gear. This Modern Warfare 4 DMZ guide turns it into a first-week plan for competitive players: what to lock in, what to protect and what to ignore. Global launch lands October 23, so the habits you build now carry into the full lobbies.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Guide: Lock In Your Two Active Duty Slots
This is an extraction post, not a ranked one. Everything below is written for the Hajin deployment and the habits that transfer to your competitive game.
You start with two Active Duty Operator slots, and a third unlocks as your DMZ Player Level rises. An Operator stays locked in a slot until you dismiss them for a recruit. Operators earn DMZ XP by surviving deployments and completing exfils, and their Dog Tag quality improves as they level. Your best Operator is the one you keep alive.
Protect The Operator You Are Levelling
Pick one Operator as your main and run your riskiest drops with the other. A surviving, levelled Operator is worth more than a fresh loadout, and an enemy can strip the Dog Tag off a loss.
Treat MIA As A Cost You Plan For
An Operator eliminated in a deployment goes MIA and cannot deploy until you recover or dismiss them. Recovery happens at the FOB's Active Duty station and costs DMZ Cash from your Bank, rising with the Trait Points invested. A recovered Operator keeps their Traits but loses their gear.
Every death costs more as an Operator deepens. Run a fresh recruit to test a risky route. You can secure a Free Loadout at each deployment if you run out of equipment.
Meta status: in flux. Early access opened October 20, and nobody has the runs to call a dominant route or loadout. Read this as the official systems, not a verdict. Treat it as a direction, not a destination, and revisit your route once the community has put real runs into the mode.
Decide Your Exit Before The Drop
Set a loot target and an exfil decision before you drop. Players lose gear because they take one more fight after they already have what they came for. Call the exit when the target is met.
Spend Trait Points With A Plan
Each successful exfil earns one Trait Point, and levelling a Dog Tag banks another. Traits sit in three trees: Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist. Once you choose a Trait, the alternatives on that branch lock out. Most of the 66 Traits are hidden and randomised, and one Operator can earn up to 18.
Chase a role, not a perfect build. At 18 Trait Points an Operator can Prestige, which resets points and grants a random Permanent Prestige Trait. Empty the backpack first, because Prestige wipes it. Later Prestige levels demand more valuable gear and more DMZ Cash, so plan the climb before you start it.
Save Points Until The Role Is Clear
Bank early Trait Points until your squad knows whether it needs a scout, a fighter or a survivor. The choice locks, so the role comes first.
Build Roles Before Traits
Squad discipline is where a pro session pays off. GG Clan's large-map pros run route planning, engagement discipline and exit calls with your squad, then review real runs so the plan holds under pressure.
