MW4 DMZ Deployment Types: Pick the Right Run Before You Infil

Story Missions, Dynamic Operations and Free Roam each pay out differently. Match the deployment to your squad's goal and every run on Hajin counts.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ opened in Early Access on October 20, and the global launch lands October 23. Before your squad touches Hajin, you face the call that shapes the entire session: which of the MW4 DMZ deployment types to queue. Queue the wrong one and you burn an hour on a run that pays nothing toward what your squad needs. Here is what Story Missions, Dynamic Operations and Free Roam each give you, and a framework for locking in the right one before infil.

Story Missions Are Your Progression Spine

This is a large-map extraction breakdown, written for squads who play DMZ to build Operators and bank gear, not to sightsee.

Story Missions are the narrative-led deployments, and they are replayable. Some stay locked until you meet their prerequisites, so the order you clear them matters. Every Story Mission hands you briefing intel, a set of objectives and rewards that include high-value gear and DMZ Cash. You also get a random mission option and milestone rewards for pushing through the chain.

Reported pre-launch coverage says Story Missions run inside shared live servers. Treat that as a warning: other squads share your map while you chase a scripted objective, so a quiet mission route is never guaranteed.

Plan Your Exfil Before the Objective

Read the briefing intel as a route plan, not lore. Mark the objective, the nearest cover and your exfil option before you leave the FOB. Squads that infil without an exit plan spend the back half of the mission improvising under fire.

Dynamic Operations Reward Squads That Stack Goals

Dynamic Operations hand your squad multiple goals in one deployment. Completing objectives earns DMZ XP and DMZ Cash, and clearing them lets you call in a Supply Drop packed with unpredictable loot. That drop is the payoff for a coordinated squad and a dead weight for one that splits up chasing separate markers.

Third-party previews report examples like shutting down weapons programmes, rescues and assaults, with some operations affecting activity across the wider map. Until the community logs real hours on these, treat that as reported detail, not confirmed behaviour.

Chain Objectives by Proximity

Elite squads sequence objectives by distance, not by reward size. A squad that clears three close objectives and calls the Supply Drop beats a squad that sprints across Hajin for one big payout and gets caught in the open.

Free Roam Is Where Your Crafting Gets Built

Free Roam drops you into Hajin without a set mission. The official detail stops there, so read it as an open deployment where your squad sets the agenda.

That agenda is usually crafting. The FOB's 3D Printer runs on Resources (Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals) plus rare Ingredients like Binding Catalyst, Biomaterials, Detonators and Control Units, and those Ingredients come from specific Hajin areas. Searching containers also supports marked Operations, earns DMZ XP and advances the FOB, so a disciplined loot route pays twice.

Reported Side Ops across the map include repairing trucks, tracking supply drops, climbing radio towers and entering fallout zones that demand a gas mask. Pack accordingly before you commit to the irradiated ground.

How to Choose Between MW4 DMZ Deployment Types

Set one goal per session, then match the deployment to it.

Chasing progression and unlocks: queue Story Missions and clear prerequisites in order. Chasing DMZ Cash and XP: queue Dynamic Operations and stack objectives toward the Supply Drop. Chasing crafting Ingredients: queue Free Roam and route straight to the Hajin areas that hold them.

Traits cut across all three. You earn 1 Trait Point for every successful exfil, plus 1 more each time your Dog Tag levels up. A failed exfil pays zero Trait Points no matter which deployment you picked. MIA recovery costs DMZ Cash, and the Free Loadout every deployment gives you a floor, so a wipe stings without ending your session.

Lock One Goal Before You Queue

Agree on the session goal in the FOB, out loud, before anyone queues. Squads that infil with three different priorities split up, loot separately and get picked apart before the exfil call.

Why the Call Belongs to Your IGL

Choosing and sequencing deployments is a squad-level call, and the IGL makes it before infil. GG Clan's large-map specialists and BR IGLs run that call from the FOB: which deployment fits the goal, which objectives to stack, when to stop looting and call exfil. Playing alongside one shows your squad how to make every run pay.

Background: Hajin, the FOB and the Exfil

DMZ drops you into the Hajin Exclusion Zone, a tri-border area near the Korean peninsula and Russia, as an off-the-books asset recovering advanced military tech. Reported landmarks include an irradiated reactor, a prison complex, the ruins of Hajin City and a military base.

Between deployments you return to the FOB to offload loot, gear up and receive your next Orders. Extraction is never instant: you call in exfil and hold while threats close in, so the final minute of every run is a squad fight, not a formality.

Meta in flux. DMZ is days old, and the patch-day previews only point a direction. The lobbies will show which deployment pays best over the coming week, so treat this framework as the read, not the verdict.
