The Sombra Roadhog rework Overwatch 2 reveal is finally complete, and neither kit resembles what you've been playing against for years. Sombra drops her DPS identity entirely for a support toolkit built around healing through hacks. Roadhog trades his alt-fire for an ability that eats incoming damage and throws it back. Season 5 launches October 6, and if you're still running last patch's counters, you're walking into lobbies blind.
The Sombra Roadhog Rework Overwatch 2 Confirms Two New Identities
Sombra is no longer a DPS pick. Blizzard confirmed she's moving to the Support roster full-time, and her kit backs that up. Hack is gone, replaced by Hotfix, which heals the target ally over time and still lets her hack health packs and enemy deployables on cooldown. Virus is gone too. Cyberspace replaces it: a projectile that explodes on impact and creates a field that heals your team and weakens anyone caught inside. Translocator and EMP stay exactly as you remember them, so her infiltration and pick potential survive the switch. What doesn't survive is the idea that Sombra players avoid healing duty. If you've been dodging Support queue because you main Sombra, that excuse ran out.
Relearn Sombra's Value Combos Before Season 5 Drops
Hotfix changes your combat cadence completely. You're no longer chaining Hack into a pick, you're timing Hotfix on your frontline before a fight, then following with Cyberspace to weaken whoever pushes into it. Drill that sequence in the training range this week, because the explosion window on Cyberspace is unforgiving the first time you see it live.
Roadhog's Trash Compactor Replaces the Alt-Fire You've Been Spamming
Roadhog keeps his Scrap Gun, his iconic hook, and Rebreather. What's gone is the alt-fire you used to spam for chip damage. In its place: Trash Compactor, an ability built to counter exactly what wrecked Roadhog for two years, burst damage he couldn't answer. It absorbs incoming enemy projectiles and compresses them into an explosive ball of scrap you fire back at whoever threw it. Scrap Hook now reloads four rounds of ammo on a successful Chain Hook instead of two, so committing to a grab no longer leaves you empty. Chain Hook itself is untouched. The identity shift is real: Roadhog stops being a hero who eats damage for no reward and starts being one who weaponizes it.
Trash Compactor Damage Numbers
Trash Compactor deals 85 to 210 HP of direct-hit damage depending on how much you've absorbed, plus up to 200 HP of area damage within a 2-meter blast radius. That's a scaling threat, not a fixed one. The longer you hold the absorb window against a sustained burst, the harder the payload hits when you release it.
The New Perks Decide Who Wins the Rework in Ranked
Perks are where this rework gets decided round to round. Sombra's Life Hack applies Hotfix automatically to allies caught in her EMP radius, turning her ultimate into a heal-and-disable combo instead of only a disable. Data Packet rewards her for hacking health packs across the map, and Cybersecurity boosts Cyberspace's healing output directly. On Roadhog's side, Here Piggy Piggy cuts Chain Hook's cooldown while Whole Hog is active, so a single ultimate can land two or three hooks instead of one. Hogdrogen Exposure lets Take a Breather heal nearby allies, and Toxic Exhaust adds a damage-and-slow field while he holds the ability. None of these perks fire themselves. You have to build around them, and most ranked players won't figure out the right order in a week of solo queue.
Stack Chain Hook Uptime With Here Piggy Piggy
If you're running Roadhog into ranked after Season 5 drops, prioritize the Chain Hook cooldown perk over the healing perk in any match where your team already runs a dedicated healer. Whole Hog into a second hook wins fights outright. That's the read a GG Clan Pro who has already drilled the new kit can hand you in one live session instead of forty ranked losses figuring it out solo.
Why Blizzard Reworked Two Heroes Everyone Complained About
Roadhog has sat in an awkward spot since his shield-canceling era ended, unable to answer burst damage the way modern tanks can. Sombra spent multiple seasons oscillating between an off-meta nuisance and a banned-feeling pick, never quite finding a permanent seat in competitive comps. Season 5 answers both problems at once instead of tuning numbers around the edges. Roadhog gets a real counter to burst. Sombra gets a role where her utility matters every fight, not only the ones where she lands a pick. That mirrors what we tracked in our Overwatch 2 patch analysis earlier this year: Blizzard increasingly prefers structural rebuilds over endless number tuning, the same pattern behind the OW2 Season 3 midcycle patch competitive meta shift. This is a structural fix, not a patch note footnote, and it's going to move pick rates in Contenders and ranked alike the moment servers update on October 6.
