TFT Hunter Aphelios Carry Guide: Turn a Rare Portal Into a Top Four

A rare portal is a rule change, not a free win. Here are the commit gates, the itemisation order and the positioning that convert one into a repeatable top…

A rare portal drops and the lobby splits in half. One half stares at the board and forces whatever they were going to force anyway. The other half rebuild the plan inside thirty seconds and take the top four off them. This TFT Hunter Aphelios carry guide is written for the second group: how to price what a rare portal actually hands you, when Aphelios is the correct answer instead of the exciting one, and how to item and position him so the board still holds at stage five.

What a Rare Portal Actually Hands You

A rare portal is a rule change, and rule changes pay whoever reprices the lobby fastest. Extra gold at stage two, forced item anvils, an augment reroll, a shifted unit pool: each one moves a different lever, and each lever makes a different comp line correct.

Reprice three things before you touch the shop. Your econ ceiling, because a gold-heavy encounter turns a slow roll into a level eight push. Your item pool, because forced components decide which carry you can genuinely build. And your contest count, because eight players read the same portal and the obvious line gets fought by four of them.

The Hunter Aphelios line wins when the portal feeds you early AD components and the rest of the lobby scatters toward the flashier answer.

Count the Contest Before You Commit

Scout every board across the first two carousel breaks and count how many players already hold a Hunter unit. Two contesters is playable. Four is a losing roll no matter how strong the comp reads on paper. Pivot while your gold still buys you options.

The TFT Hunter Aphelios Carry Guide Starts at Stage Two

Commit on criteria, never on vibes. You take this line when three conditions land together: an Aphelios in your first two shops or a natural at stage two three, at least two usable AD components in your pool, and an opening board that reaches stage three without bleeding twenty health.

Miss one and you are forcing, and forcing is how a strong comp produces a sixth. Hunter wants bodies early, so the frontline you scrape together in stage two decides whether you reach the level eight roll with health to spend.

Here is the part most players miss. The rare portal does not change the commit criteria. It changes how fast you can meet them.

The Three Gates for This Line

Gate one: an Aphelios in hand by stage two three. Gate two: two usable components for an AD carry. Gate three: a frontline that survives stage three without a double loss streak. Three gates open, commit. Two gates open, stay flexible and re-evaluate at the stage three carousel.

How Hunter and Aphelios Fit Together

Hunter is a targeting trait, not a raw damage trait. It pays the board that isolates and deletes one high-value unit rather than smearing damage across a full enemy line. That is why it slots cleanly under a hyper-carry and badly under an area-damage comp.

Aphelios is the cleanest hyper-carry in the pool for that job. He scales off attack speed and crit, he wants to be shooting from the first frame of the round, and he converts every item you hand him into single-target pressure. Buy him four seconds of frontline and he takes the round alone.

The trap is treating him as a flexible carry. He is a commitment, and the boards that place first with him look almost identical to one another.

Itemise Aphelios for the Fight You Will Face

Build the second item for the lobby, never for the ladder guide. Aphelios wants attack speed first so he starts converting early, then a damage multiplier, then the answer to whatever the lobby is actually fielding.

Attack speed opens the round. Guinsoo's Rageblade gets him ramping before the enemy frontline reaches him, and everything downstream scales off that ramp. Crit and penetration follow: Infinity Edge when the lobby runs squishy backlines, Last Whisper the moment two players stack armour on their tanks.

Slot three is a read, not a template. Bloodthirster against burst boards that delete him at four seconds. Giant Slayer into a lobby stacking health. Never lock the third item before the stage four scout, because the wrong third item separates a second from a fifth.

Hold Your Third Component Until Stage Four

Slam your first two items the moment you can. Then hold the third component through the stage four scout and build into the two boards most likely to beat you. Holding a component costs nothing. The wrong item costs you the lobby.

Position the Board Around One Threat

Positioning is where this comp gets won, and where most players throw it. Aphelios needs the corner enemy dive units reach last, and a body across every jump path, not only the shortest one.

Move him every round. Static positioning against a lobby that scouts is a free loss, and by stage five the two players above you are positioning specifically to kill your carry. Watch which corner their assassin targets, then take the opposite one.

Your frontline placement carries the same weight. Spread the tanks so the first ability hits one body, keep one unit adjacent to Aphelios as a bodyguard, and never stack four units inside a single ultimate.

Why a Live Lobby Teaches This Faster

Positioning and pivot timing are the two skills a VOD transfers worst, because both are decisions made against a clock with incomplete information. GG Clan's TFT specialists sit in your lobby and call the read while the shop is still open, so the pattern lands in one session instead of forty ranked games.
